You Are Your Identity

It is estimated that at any given time, approximately half a million Australians do not have a Birth Certificate and therefore struggle with identity issues.  This affects access to government provided services – notably education and health – as well as employment opportunities and overall enjoyment of life – it’s hard to join a sporting club without proof of your identity!

Since 2011, Origenate has been dedicated to the provision of free services to register births and obtain birth certificates – we call these our SignUp Days ©.   While our primary focus is with Indigenous communities, we provide services for all Australians, assisted by community networks across Australia. 

As a not-for-profit organisation, Origenate provides these services through the raising of funds from government, private donors and businesses.  We also receive generous, in-kind support on our SignUp Days © through our collaboration with grass-roots community groups such as Clontarf Foundation; GenerationOne; Rotary; Uniting Care and many others.

Signup Days © are open to anyone who requires birth registration and/or a Birth Certificate.  SignUp Days are held in accessible, friendly, community places where people feel comfortable, and can obtain confidential and culturally appropriate help when applying to register a birth and obtain a birth certificate.  Signup Days © are designed to help celebrate community identity and belonging.

The Origenate team coordinates birth registration and birth certificate applications and provides a vital link to relevant State or Territory Registries for processing, along with facilitating the payment of birth certificates on the applicant’s behalf.  Where necessary we draw on community networks to help follow up with applications, ensuring that applicants’ births are first registered, and that birth certificates are received. 

Birth registration and Birth Certificates are arguably the first step towards full participation, employment, legal rights and identity as an Australian citizen, and Origenate’s aim is to provide every Australian with a Birth Certificate as a first right of citizenship – as a way of making our nation more inclusive and prosperous.
